    Position Description

    SUMMARY OF JOB DUTIES:

    Under limited supervision by the Vice President of Student Development, this position provides counseling and intervention strategies for students of the SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities. Counsels students on social, emotional, and mental health issues and concerns. Reviews and interprets data on student discipline, absenteeism, grades, and other matters. Seeks and examines trends to identify students needing additional support and guidance. Recognize and address barriers to access mental health services and associated stigma, including cultural and linguistic impediments. Communicates in a regular and timely manner concerning student incidents, problems, and progress. Coordinates conferences amongst involved parties, as necessary. Advocate, collaborate, and coordinate with school and community stakeholders to ensure that students and their families have access to mental health service. Coordinates and leads drug and alcohol abuse intervention programs. Coordinates and leads eating disorder intervention programs. Seeks and implements intervention strategies for students. Provides regular and timely training to members of the school community, including students, parents, and employees, about student mental health needs and intervention strategies. Makes referrals to outside health providers as appropriate. Participates in and assists with committees, programs, meetings, and activities. Participates in and assists with orientation for students and employees. On-call; available to provide professional service and advice; carries and answers phone in an emergency. Performs other related duties as required.

    Skills and Requirements

    MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:
    Bachelor's degree in guidance, counseling, or social sciences and professional experience in human services or social services programs and SC Licensure as a professional counselor (LPC) or social worker (LSW).

    PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

    Master's Degree in guidance, counseling, or social sciences and professional experience in human services or social services program.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

    Applicant must have knowledge of normal and abnormal behavior adjustment techniques. Knowledge of casework practices and interviewing techniques. Knowledge of legal principles and practices of clinical counseling and educational services. Applicant must be able to hear, speak audibly, walk, and lift up to 50 lbs. Must possess a valid driver's license. Must be able to work variable hours and shifts, including some weekends.
