How to Apply
Lab technician in the mechanical support facility for the experimental research and education program in the Department of Physics & Astronomy. Perform other duties as assigned.
40% - Essential - Operate CNC mills, lathes, and CAM programming software (Mastercam or Surfcam).
Operate manual lathe and mill machine. Threading and tapping. MIG and TIG welding of stainless, aluminum and mild steel. Operate and maintain all shop equipment such as drill press, band saw, shear, metal brake, hole punch press. Understanding of mechanics, basic electricity and carpentry. Knowledge of material alloys as well as 40 % plastics and MACOR ceramics. Use mathematics to calculate parameters of machining.
30% - Essential - Produce close tolerance parts from blueprints or CAD drawings with minimal supervision. Communicate with principle researchers and graduate students on projects and modifications to existing systems in their field of research. Maintain parts drawings in parts library for future use. Advise researchers on materials needed for projects as well as determine the amount of materials needed.
15% - Essential - Must be able to work independently following blue prints or supervisors instructions to create high quality, high tolerance parts and finishes. Prepare plans for the machining of parts and integration systems. Knowledge of high vacuum, cryogenic, and electronic systems a plus.
10% - Essential - Fabricate instructional equipment for classrooms. Help with the setup of new and existing labs within the department of Physics and Astronomy.
5% - Essential - Must have a valid drivers license and be willing to travel with physics projects to test sites if required. Will need a passport. Must be able to operate a forklift and pass license exam for forklift training..
A bachelor's degree in a health-related field and journey-level work experience in the specialty area; or an associate degree or equivalent training in a health-related or technology field and advanced work experience in the specialty area. A master's degree in a health-related field and entry-level experience in the specialty area may be substituted for the requirements stated above. Previous technical supervisory work experience is required for supervisory positions.
